We highly recommend a visit to the museum town of Orvelte, one of the most beautiful villages in the province of Drenthe. A unique atmosphere comes from the monumental farms, the majestic trees, beautiful gardens and cobblestone and clinker streets.
At the museum Veenmuseum in Barger-Compascuum, near the town of Emmen,the history of the peat comes to life. You are driving and sailing through nostalgic villages and even through a natural high peat area with authentic peat quarries. During the season bakers, grocers, clogmakers and peat cutters can be seen working there daily.
For our younger guests we invite you to visit Kabouterland (The land of the gnomes) in the village of Exloo in the province of Drenthe. A great day awaits with gnomes, trolls, animals and multiple playing possibilities in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. Join the adventure of wandering through secret rabbitholes to spy on the gnomes!
Or visit the forest of Ter Apel where you will find a marvelous world of excitement and adventure. Wonderwereld (Wonderworld) offers entertainment for young and old: fairytales, scavenger hunts, playground areas and many special animals to see. Admire our biggest collection of owls in the Uilenburcht (The Owl Fortress). Daily birds of prey shows are offered.
While in Ter Apel why not visit the monastery? Since 1992 the Kruisherenklooster is on the UNESCO "Top 100" list of monuments in the Netherlands, protected by international law. This quality assurance confirms the unique status of the monastery Ter Apel. Following this visit please enjoy a drink or a meal at the Hotel Boschhuis. Here time seems to have come to a standstill. The majestic entrance, the barroom with its chimney and the stylish á la carte restaurant with the big mantelpiece are for the most part completely authentic.
